Weight Loss Surgery Cost in India

Weight Loss, Weight Loss, Weight Loss; people who are obese or at the edge of becoming obese experience much of this hullabaloo all the time. However, all of this hasn’t prevented the counting of weight loss surgeries to rise over and over. The number of weight loss surgeries in India is rising, so is the demand for it and the hence the cost. Though India is known for offering most affordable treatment round the globe and that too with the comfort of home, is it still affordable for all the people? Let’s find out.

What is Weight Loss Surgery?
Bodies with excess weight are prone to numerous diseases including but not limited to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and depression. Usually, people aged between 18 to 65 years with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 37 kg/m2 fall in this category. Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, is carried out to loosen the excessive amount of fat from the body. There are different procedures developed for this, which one is used depends on the weight and health of the patient.

Bariatric surgery mainly employs either of the two principles – Restriction or Malabsorption; or a combination of both. In restriction, a portion of the stomach is removed to decrease the overall appetite of the person. For instance, the popular surgery Sleeve Gastrectomy removes a quarter of the stomach from the body.

On the other hand, in malabsorptive procedures, the channel of digestion is re-routed for lesser absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. However, it has been seen that combination of the two i.e. the malabsorptive-restrictive procedure works out to be the one most effective for weight loss.

Treatment & Cost in India
India, undoubtedly is the choice of medical patients around the world. Homely environment, light on budget and the quality of treatment, what else can a patient expect from a medical treatment. The recent case of Eman Ahmed, world’s heaviest woman, is the testimony of the fact. She came to Mumbai all the way from Egypt with a weight of 500 kgs and has reduced more than 150 kgs since her surgery, and is expected to lose even more gradually. The lady was treated in the Saifee Hospital located in Mumbai city. Apart from Mumbai, cities that provide weight loss and metabolic surgeries include Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Nagpur, Kerala, Chandigarh, Goa and Jaipur.

The cost of treatment here ranges from INR 2.5 lacs to 6 lacs and that of course, varying with the city of treatment and level of complication. Here are the three common most surgical treatments along with their costs offered for weight loss in India.

1. Gastric Bypass
Also known as Roux-en-Y surgery, gastric bypass is a procedure in which stomach is divided into two portions and the smaller portion is connected to small intestine. This increases the feeling of fullness and reduces appetite. In India, it comes in the range of INR 2,50,000 to INR 5,50,000.

2. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
In this process, the upper part of the stomach is squeezed together with a silicon band. This makes the person full even after consuming small portions of food. The tightness of the band can be adjusted with a tube also attached to the skin. By injecting saline water through the skin, it passes onto the band and adjusts its width. This procedure costs from INR 3,00,000 to INR 4,50,000.

3. Gastric Sleeve
This is an irreversible surgery but not uncommon. In this, a large portion of stomach is cut out leaving only a portion as small as a banana sleeve. The cost estimate starts from INR 2,75,000 and goes up to INR 5,25,000.

Blood Cancer Treatment Cost in India

What is Blood Cancer?
Also known as the bone marrow, in human body, there’s a flexible tissue in the bones responsible for producing blood cells like Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC) and platelets. RBCs regulate blood circulation, WBCs ensure a healthy immune system and platelets prevent clotting of blood. These cells are produced by differentiation of stem cells present in the bone marrow. However, sometimes are there when the cells released are not mature enough to handle their respective functions. These are known as blasts or leukaemia cells. This creates lack of normal blood cells in the body and a diseased condition called as blood cancer, or leukaemia. It is mainly characterized by bleeding, bruising, infections or swelling.

Treatment and Cost
Blood cancer is the deadliest of all cancers and literally a blood-suckling monstrous disease. After a series of physical examinations, blood tests, X-rays, bone marrow extraction and cytogenetics, the treatment procedure is devised to the patient. The treatment varies with the stage & type of cancer, age of the patient, any previous or current health disorders and chromosome patterns. Following are the common treatments advised to leukaemia patients; which of these and how many times depend on the medical condition of the patient.

1. Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy aims at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells by use of chemicals and cytotoxic substances. These chemicals may be inserted via injections or in the form of pills. An average cost of chemotherapy treatment in India falls in the range of INR 1.5 lacs to 3 lacs. Fortis Hospital in New Delhi offers quite affordable chemotherapy treatment for patients from middle-class backgrounds.

2. Radiation Therapy
In addition to chemotherapy, high doses of radiation are required to completely destroy cancer cells. Its cost depends on the stage of cancer and number of radiation scans required by the patient. If the cancer is detected in its early stages, lesser number of scans would do. In India, the cost of radiation therapy per cycle is between INR 20,000 to INR 40,000 depending on whether it’s a private or a government hospital. Also, if high-end technological equipments like IMRT and IGRT are used in the treatment, the costs may go up to INR 75,000 and even INR 1.5 lacs.

3. Stem Cell Transplant
Some patients suffering from leukaemia may require undergoing stem cell transplant. Before chemotherapy, the stem cells are taken from the body of the patient or a donor with same genetic pattern. After the therapy the stem cells are released back in the bone marrow. Within few weeks, they start producing normal blood cells. The cost of this procedure starts from INR 6 lacs, however, with more complications, it may even to up to INR 30 to 40 lacs.

4. Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy or the biological therapy is treatment procedure in which natural body-like agents are utilized to stimulate immune response in the body. The cost of a session of immunotherapy can start from INR 3 lacs to INR 10 lacs depending on the stage of cancer.

5. Targeted Therapy
A targeted therapy is aimed at destroying the cancer cells with use of specific drugs like Herceptin without affecting healthy cells in the body. Its cost generally depends on the MRP of the drug prescribed for therapy and the number of cycles of therapy. Based on that, a drug may be as cheap as INR 30,000 to as costly as INR 1 lakh too.

Overall Cost
With treatments combined and individuals, the overall Blood Cancer Treatment Cost in India comes out to be in the range of INR 3 to 5 lacs, which is almost perhaps ten times lower than the cost abroad.

Cancer Treatment: India vs. Abroad

There goes on a constant debate on technological advancement of India relative to other countries. So far, there hasn’t been a solid conclusion as such that justifies whether India is technologically backward in any way. Still, there are some areas in which people believe abroad to be a better option than India like Cancer Treatment, a very common scenario now these days.

There are cancer hospitals in India and there are cancer hospitals abroad. In the past, there have been many prominent celebrities who suffered from Cancer and preferred abroad from India. This has led to a notion among Indians that India in some way is backward in Cancer Treatment. However, does it really matter whether you are getting treatment from India or from abroad or only the quality of treatment? Let’s find out.

1. Type Of Treatment To Fight Cancer
The type of treatment depends on the type of cancer. Based on it, various treatments are available like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant and others. Also, a number of clinical trials are available where research and study is carried out on the cancer patients to understand more about them and how they live. As far as the treatment is concerned, India offers the same treatment as offered in any part of the world without a tinge of lack, as confirmed by the Director of Tata Memorial Research Centre, Dr. Bidwe. So, at this point, India and abroad scores the same.

Moving on…

2. Cost of Treatment
When it comes to the cost of cancer treatment in India, it is absolutely affordable for a middle-class Indian household as compared to abroad. In fact, in many government hospitals, the treatment is completely free. For instance, the cost of chemotherapy plus medicines for breast cancer in India is around Rs. 50,000. While in US, the same treatment costs approximately 500 times more than that in India.

Besides, the drugs employed in cancer treatment are far cheaper in India than that in abroad. For example, a simple drug used for leukaemia that costs Rs. 2500 in India costs Rs. 60,000 in London.

3. Doctor to Patient Ratio
There are over 1 million cancer patients reported in India till date. And the hospitals and doctors that treat the disease are few. Furthermore, the study of oncology and MBBS takes years to complete resulting in a few surgeons landing on the line. And probably because, most of the oncologists and highly qualified surgeons tend to shift abroad in order to gain better financial opportunities. In turn, this creates a large number of doctors settled in abroad thus facilitating treatment options there. Here, India lags behind due to scarcity of availability of cancer treatment.

4. Diagnosis of The Disease
The state of diagnosis in India has reported that mostly, the cancer cases in India are diagnosed long after it penetrates the cells of body. They are diagnosed at advanced stage of tumours unlike most cases abroad. This can be due to any of the following factors:
a. Since complete treatment of cancer is available at but a limited places in India, so not everyone can afford the travel and stay to reach out to the concerned hospital.

b. In cases like breast cancer and cervical cancer, many women don’t even report to the doctor due to the shame or fear of social stigma. Secondly, the symptoms of disease can be vaginal bleeding, armpit swelling and icicles around pubic area. So, under the veil of Indian conservativeness, women fail to get their disease diagnosed at early stages

c. Lack of cancer awareness and education.

d. Early cancer detection procedures like pap smear and mammogram are still not available in many villages.

Conclusion
As we have seen, the question here is not really whether the cancer treatment is better in India or abroad. The real point is do we have essential means to ensure a complete, proper and comfortable treatment of cancer patients. And the answer is yes. Same goes with other countries as well.

We have technology, we have affordable costs and most importantly, here we are under the support of our friends and families that can’t be achieved in foreign environments.

The crux is neither of the countries is more advanced than the other. The only thing is awareness. The more awareness we spread, the more doctors we get, the more early detections will be made.

And trust me, cancer is curable. Asthma is not, diabetes is not but cancer is.

Types Of Weight-Loss Surgeries

Since the last decade, severe obesity has become one of the most profound issues across the globe. In India alone, statistics say that over 30 million people are obese. Not hundred, not thousand, but millions. And these extra flabs don’t limit themselves to flesh, they sink deep inside the body to bring about a thousand other problems alongwith including high cholesterol, diabetes, heart attacks, stroke and major cardiovascular diseases. This evidently gives us a strict call for action one of which can be weight-loss surgeries.

Weight-loss surgeries, commonly known as the bariatric surgeries utilize principles of gastric restriction, malabsorption or a combination of the two to reduce body weight thereby lowering the risk of many problems associated with it. There are mainly four kinds of weight-loss surgeries, each carrying its own procedure, pros and cons. Let’s look at them one at a time.

1. Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
Often called as Gastric Bypass, this surgery is perhaps the best standard of bariatric surgeries.

Procedure
Gastric Bypass is executed in two parts. First, the stomach is divided in such a way that a small stomach pouch is created at its top leaving the rest of the stomach as it is. This pouch is approximately 30 millilitres in volume. After this, the top of small intestine is divided into two stems. The bottom stem of the intestine is connected to the pouch while the top one is connected to the bottom portion of the stomach.

So, when the pouch receives food, the food is directly bypassed to the small intestine which leads to less absorption of calories. Meanwhile, the larger portion of the stomach keeps on releasing digestive juices and acids that flow to the reattached intestine.

Advantages

1. The bypassing of food results in hormonal reverse mechanisms that further suppress hunger and reduce appetite thus leading to less food consumtion.
2. Significant percentage of weight loss, usually 60% to 80%
3. Long term sustainability
4. Maintenance and increase of energy production.

Disadvantages
1. Nutritional deficiencies.
2. Complications owing to a complicated surgical procedure
3. Long term bed rest
4. Side effects including depression and anxiety

2. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
This surgery, also known as the Lap Band Procedure employs the restrictive approach to weight loss. It uses a band, called Adjustable Gastric Band to limit the amount of calories a person consumes in a day.

Procedure
The adjustable gastric band is a silicone device comprising of an inflated balloon like device. In this procedure, after making incision through the belly button, the band is inserted at the top middle portion of the stomach dividing it into two parts. Next, a port is inserted under the skin of the abdomen and connected to the band via a tube. The top or the narrow portion of the stomach receives the food. This makes the person feel full after consuming a much smaller quantity of food. The feeling of full stomach depends on the size of opening between the two portions of the stomach.

Advantages
1. 40% to 50% weight loss
2. Involves no cutting or stitching of stomach
3. No Risk of nutritional deficiencies
4. Requires a hospital stay of merely a day or two at the most

Disadvantages
1. Slower weight loss
2. Foreign devices in the body can cause mechanical problems
3. Band erosion or band slipping
4. Dilation of esophagus in case of overeating
5. Strict Postoperative diet

3. Sleeve Gastrectomy
This surgical procedure involves removal of nearly 80% of the stomach that results in a smaller leftover stomach, called a sleeve.

Procedure
The procedure begins with a longitudinal resection of the stomach. The sleeve is calibrated with a bougie leaving a much smaller stomach usually the size of 150 mililitres.

Advantages
1. Reduces appetite.
2. Shorter hospital stay, usually a day or two
3. Favourable hormonal changes

Disadvantages
1. Non-reversible procedure
2. High complication rates
3. Long term nutritional deficiencies

4. Duodenal Switch With Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD/DS)
BPD/DS is one of the most effective methods for diabetic patients. It combines two procedures. First a sleeve gastrectomy is carried out.

Procedure
After the sleeve stomach is created, the topmost portion of the small intestine is divided into two parts. The first part is connected to the opening of the sleeve. The other part is reconnected to this part of the intestine. This results in a significant portion of food bypassing through the intestine without absorption of many calories.

Advantages
1. Over 70% fat absorption
2. Accepts normal diet
3. Favourable hormonal changes

Disadvantages
1. Can be fatal
2. Mineral or protein deficiencies
3. Very long hospital stay
4. Slow recovery after surgery
